[ARCHIVED] Flat Top Community Park Well Replacement (Well No. 2)

Project Description:

The Flat Top Community Park Well was originally drilled and a small pump house constructed in 1962 at the corner of SR 224 (commonly known as W. Van Giesen) and Bombing Range Road. The well produced over 900 gpm of potable water for the City of West Richland; enough water to provide adequate fire flow and service to nearly 1,300 of the 5,300 the city’s homes. Chlorine gas is used for bacterial disinfection of the water. The use of chlorine gas for disinfection of water is old technology that has been in use over 130 years.

Over the last 60 years, the City has rehabilitated, repaired and or modified the well numerous times to try and maintain the 900 gpm pumping capacity.  Most recently in November 2019, the well experience some type of subsurface event causing the well’s sand screen and filter pack to collapse, rendering the well inoperable.

In May 2021, the City hired a hydrogeologist who recommendation was to: 1) abandon the existing Flat Top Well, 2) drill a new well, and 3) construct a new well building for a Sodium Hypochlorite On-Site Generation System to eliminate the use of chlorine gas for disinfection.
